A Political Salon: Conversation with Dr. Amir Bagherpour
This month, our salon featured Dr. Amir Bagherpour a former State Department official who served in numerous capacities under Secretaries of State of Clinton and Kerry. Dr. Bagherpour is currently a partner at giStrat, an advanced decision analytics firm focused on solving some of the world’s most complex problems. His work spans both domestic and international politics.
We are grateful for Dr. Bagherpour and his wife Cassandra (co-founders of this salon series) for hosting this month's event at their home in Laguna Niguel, which benefitted Progress Humanity, a nonprofit organization focusing on economic development across Sub-Saharan Africa and a project of which Cassandra is a part. Instead of asking you to buy a ticket to this event, we ask that you donate $25 or more to this organization. You can read about Progress Humanity and make your donation at www.ProgressHumanity.org
When making your donation, please note your affiliation with our event in the online payment "notes" box. Progress Humanity is a registered non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. with a 501(3)(c) filing pending approval.

THE UK IN USA: GREAT BRITAIN'S PUBLIC DIPLOMACY IN THE UNITED STATES
International Studies Public Forum, University of California, Irvine
Public diplomacy can be defined as the means by which a country communicates with foreign publics with the aim to inform and influence audiences overseas for the purpose of promoting its national interest and advancing its foreign policy goals. Public diplomacy is an integral part of the UK Government’s activities. Whether it’s a Royal Visit, the 2012 Olympic Games or a highly visual social media campaign, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) engages foreign audiences through various means in order to promote Britain as GREAT place to visit, study and invest. Digital diplomacy, in particular, has shaped the way the FCO does business. What started as a communications tool is now playing a more important role in achieving key foreign policy outcomes. The FCO has integrated its digital strategy across every element of its work, leading to a more effective, more open organization. Social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, has impacted every part of the FCO’s foreign policy formulation - from predicting developments, to formulating and implementing policy, to influencing and identifying people to influence. Azar discussed her career with the British Consulate-General, Los Angeles including how she used global events (such as the Olympics and the Royal Visit of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge) and public diplomacy tools (like the GREAT campaign and social media) to reinforce the special relationship between the UK and the U.S. Details at http://internationalstudies.ss.uci.edu/node/15847.
